So again, we leave the country but keep the theme: yet another film about love. About love between men, and the problems it might bring about to try to pick up a guy at a bar, a park or a metro station at a time when coming out would mean you to loose your job, most of your friends and maybe even your life. One thing seems to be consistent throughout time and space: the existance of (ulta-)orthodox groups and their ability to create and sustain hate and violence on and against the slightest sign of otherness. But where there is oppression there is resistance and therefore “Milk” tells one story from the fight of american homosexuals against discrimination and for equal rights. And it tells it by the example of Harvey Milk a 70ies gay rights activist and politican who out of a personal dilemma became the leader of a whole movement.

At the beginning of the movie we observe Harvey Milk pick up another man, Scott Smith later on will become his lover, at a subway station. It is Harvey’s birthday and so they share his cake, his bed and his frustration about his existance in a state of permanent hiding. And contemplating over some smears of icing in Harveys face they decide to move to the more liberal San Francisco. But soon after their arrival they find that, while they might be able to openly show their love in public here, they are still subject to discrimination and violence. Gays are harrassed both by local police and citizens and Harvey is denied entrance into his districts merchants association. This is the tipping point where the frustrated individual Harvey stands up and becomes what is to be the figurehead of a political movement.

It is this personal connection and its implications that drove Harvey Milk to that point and it is these personal issues that drive the story. The political story it tells, about the gay rights movement and its opponents from the christian-conservative milieu, while being important in its own right, draws its color, its flesh, its reason to be from the other story the movie tells and that is closely interwoven with the first one: the (love) story of Harvey Milk himself and the lively community that formed around his shop. That Gus Van Sant succeeds in depicting both his main protagonist and his surroundings in all their vividness is mainly due to two things: The extensive use of footage dating back to that time and the stunning performance Sean Penn delivers as Harvey White.

So, despite its tragic outcome and depressing theme “Milk” will not only educate you about one of the most important movements of the last century it will also entertain you by letting you share a couple of years with a fantastic person and enterainer called Harvey Milk.

Menschliche Erlebnisse, Eindrücke gibt es in unvorstellbarer Zahl: Die Vorstellung dessen, was 6 Milliarden Menschen jeden Tag an Einzigartigkeiten erleben, an Un-Nach-Vollziehbarkeiten… sprengt jede Vorstellungskraft. Ein Stimmengewirr, ein Gedankengewirr.
Über manches dessen kann man sich aber einig werden, nach-vollziehen. Geteilte Stimmungsräume gibt es. Zum Beispiel: Das Meer. Der Strand, der heutzutage keine Funktion mehr hat – außer: Gedankenraum zu sein. Freiheit, Weite, Ewigkeit. Absenz von Pflicht.

“Ocean Shell on Ear…” steht auf Drift:In:Slow:Motions myspace-page unter der Rubrik “klingt wie:”. Und tatsächlich brummt es ab und an wie aus ozeanischen Tiefen. Ob’s die akustische Erinnerung der Muschel ist, oder eigene Kopf unter Wasser… Synthies, Computersounds. Digitales Frickeln und Wandern und Gitarren in möwenhafter Bewegung: Mal hoch ziehend, mal langsam durch den Sand im Kreis…

Halbdunkle Unterwasserbilder in Blue, organisches Akustikgitarrenpluckern in Home – vielleicht mit Blick auf das Strandhaus. Ein Langsamerwerden der Welt in Below, wie beim Herabtauchen ins tiefe Wasser von der Gitarre zum schwebenden Keyboard… Sieben Meeres-Lieder stehen auf der myspace-Page, ein bisschen Ruhe vom Ende der Welt haftet an allen. Bedenkt man, dass das Meer eben Stimmungsraum ist, und der Strand ein von der Industrie verlassener Raum: Was könnte auch besser passen, als Ambient, und die uneffizienten, geduldigen Strukturen von Post-Rock.

Und: Ob es Zufall ist, dass sich das Thema des Albums in der Aufnahmekonstellation wiederspiegelt?

fallen/legen: Chris, was “erzählt” dein Album?

Chris/D:I:S:M: Transfeeling schwimmt in der Thematik: “A Day By The Ocean”. Jeder Track steht für ein bestimmtes Gefühl, das geweckt wird, wenn man einen Tag alleine mit dem Meer verbringt.

Nach welchem Muster funktionieren die Songs – gibt’s einen konkreten “Inhalt”? Zum Beispiel bei Storm7, den wir hier zum Download haben?

Also ‘Storm7′ handelt von dem “Storm” der unerwartet aufzieht. Wie ein wankenes Schiff torkelt man durch Höhen und Tiefen…. am Ende wird allerdings alles wieder gut.
Was erscheint, ist der ersehnte Ort und das Gefühl was man hatte, bevor der Sturm aufzog…

Wie kams, dass du dir gerade das Meer als Thema ausgesucht hast? Steht dahinter ein ganz konkretes Erlebnis, oder eine besondere Affinität zu Wasser, oder…?

“A Day By The Ocean”, das Motto, bedeutet für mich vollkommene Entspannung und Freiheit. Es gibt für mich nichts schöneres, als das Meer ganz alleine, fernab von Trubel und Alltag genießen zu dürfen. Und… nichts unerforschter, spannender, faszinierender… als der Ozean!

…wie wichtig ist dabei das “allein”?

Das halte ich für absolut notwendig! Nur so kannst du dich vollkommen gehen und “treiben” lassen, bist nicht abgelenkt und Träume und Gefühle können sich entfalten.

Auf Deiner myspace-page steht auch dein Name allein – “spiegelt” sich das auch beim Aufnehmen, spielst du tatsächlich alles selbst ein?

Ja, ich spiel alles selber und alleine ein, in meinem “Homestudio”… D:I:S:M ist schon so eine Arte “side-project”, ich spiel noch in der Band Bitune, und arbeite außerdem mit Amos aus München zusammen. Allerdings nehm ich mein Projekt D:I:S:M sehr ernst. Ich möchte gern noch mehr Themen aufgreifen, und “musikalisch untermalen” – an Soundtracks bin zum Beispiel auch sehr interessiert.

Mit dem verträumten Glitzern der gedämpften E-Gitarre fängt es an, die Füße im Sand, und aus den Bildern den Ton heruntergedimmt: Sonnenbeobachtungen am Strand – dann fegt der Sturm durch die Boxen, die Gedanken, peitscht Wasser und Sand auf, die in schneller Folge auf Schiffsplanken schlagen oder schmerzhaft in die Augen geraten. Mit der Kombination aus Schlagzeugschlägen und auf- und abschwankenden Gitarrenläufen, steigen die Wellen, und zerbersten klatschend.

Vorbei geht aber alles: Am Ende funkelt wieder die Sonne, und das Meer atmet ruhig und gleichmäßig…

Storm7 will tatsächlich genau diese Geschichte erzählen, das verrät D:I:S:Ms Chris uns – aber das interessante an gut gemachter Konzeptmusik: Man kann sie erklären, sie kann für sich sprechen. Und: Sie funktioniert stumm. Als feines Stück Post-Rock, mit den träumenden Intro- und Outro-Streifen, den kräftigen Drums und den in die Magengrube stoßenden und den Hörer in die Luft zerrenden Gitarren. Ist schließlich auch eine erzählende Melodie einfach: Eine Melodie.

Diesmal übrigens eine Rarität als Sonntags-mp3: Ein noch nicht v.eröffentlichtes. Ende des Jahres erst soll das Debüt D:I:S:Ms erscheinen…

Where to go from here? As I would like to keep a certain flow, a certain connectedness between the single entries of this column, and as we are leaving the Middle East for now, I guess it is only logical to keep the theme of last weeks entry: a more or less tragic love story between two men. Let’s see what we can spot in differences and similarities when we travel from an ultra-orthodox community in Israel to a sometimes similar orthodox community: a bavarian sports club, a rowing club to be precise. And let’s watch Summerstorm (Sommersturm) a german movie dating back to 2004 about the coming of age and coming out of two boys set in the context of a rowing competition.

Its main characters are Achim and Tobi, two members of a bavarian rowing team that is attending a training camp during some hot and sunny summerdays. The film introduces them as best buddies, sharing literally everything up to that point. Be it pranks and the follwing punishment at the boathouse, be it success with the rowing team or be it their first experiences with girls… during this summer and movie they are going to discover that they might not be willing or able to keep on sharing everything as they did. As it turns out there is more to bother about than the two boys girlfriends or the fact that their competing team at the camp is entirly queer, the thing that is going to bother both of them most, is their own relationship to each other, as they slowly realize that Tobi got feelings for Achim.

If oppression was the key word when describing Eyes Wide Open, the key word for describing Summerstorm would be liberation. While there clearly are moments in this movie too where homosexuality gets stigmatized, the bigger obstacles to its characters lie in the freedom of choice the fact that they are coming of age offers to them and the general lack of orientation this brings. The topic of Summerstorm are less the restrictions society imposes upon peoples sexuality but the problems they themselves might have to define it. Due to this and its more comic setting Summerstorm stays on the brighter side of the problematic Eyes Wide Shut discussed without denying or playing it down. It therefore is clearly a movie you should see and why not on a warm and cosy summernight?

On a side note: Does anybody feel excluded by the change from German to English? Or offended by my reckless missuse of their mothertongue? Do you like my recommondations or don’t you care and all this is just a personal diary? In short: Do you like it or not?

Andererseits: Hipster sollen die Zielgruppe hier eh nicht sein, und das Bild des Samstag-Nachmittags spricht nicht für diese These: Auf dem Bayreuther Uni Open Air vom Samstag… standen vier sehr, sehr schmächtige Jungs auf der Bühne, vielleicht etwas im Stich gelassen von dem Sound, der über die nicht vorhandenen Giebel der frühbundesrepublikanischen Bildungsbauten hinweg wummerte. Und vom Publikum, dass eher Bodi Bill entgegenschmachtete…

So oder so: Die Playzahlen auf last.fm und internationale Kommentare lassen erahnen: Im Ausland sind Beat! Beat! Beat! schon eine kleine Nummer größer als am Ostrand Süddeutschlands. Und das kaum zu Unrecht. Denn so smart gemacht ist Pop Zucker auf einem Clubabend: Bass umarmt Gitarre und Schlagzeug im Stakkato, das Lead-Riff erinnert an die schmissigsten Foals – oder an den schließlich verdammt intelligenten Rock von Ter Haar. Da kann auch der Akademiker mitnicken.

Die Stimme hallt mit den Strobelights und an den Refrain passt, ganz organisch, noch ein “oh oh-oh!”. Ein Break zum Kopfwackeln und auf die Schuhesehen, und so ist Tanzmusik: Schön.

Das weiß allem Anschein nach vor allem der NME zu würdigen, und hostet schon mal den Song zur Beschreibung: Fireworks. Hype-Avantgarde. Antithesen, hee. Aber: Viel Spaß.

…und nun, Lebensjahrzehnt 2. Neue Menschen am Ruder. Alles ein wenig anders. Nur ein wenig. Im Süden steht eine neue Bühne. Auf der auch gelesen wird. Eher harmloses. Fischgedichte. Mhh. Und akustisches gespielt. Eher harmlos. Ausnahmen wie William Fitzsimmons, Talking To Turtles, Norman Palm bestätigen die Regel. Und gehen im übersteuerten Bassgewitter des Minizelts hoffnungslos unter. Ein Jammer.

Freitagsabends um viertel vor zehn ist es im Mai fast dunkel im weiten Raum der Mecklenburger Seenplatte. Erst das zweite Konzert des Tages auf der vernachlässigten Zeltbühne, und dunkelblaues Licht schimmert verräterisch mondhaft durch die weiße Plane über den Köpfen. Und auf den Holzplanken des Bühnenaufbaus werden jetzt zwei Gitarren und ein wuchtiger Bass zu einem sacht Fahrt aufnehmenden Strang geflochten. Regungslosigkeit in den Musikerkörpern. Schritt vor Schritt zurück, sonst Reibung mit dem Laufschritt der Musik. Minutenlang wort- und gesangloser Aufbau, schon mal einen Arm in die Luft reißen. Schlagzeugcrescendo. In den Gitarren die hallenden Endorphine der Major-Akkorde, und dann…

…interessantes gab es da schon zu sehen. Keine große Namen dieses Jahr, kein Tocotronic, keine überseeischen Indie-Helden. Aber bei Two Door Cinema Club nachhören, ob im geschickten Clubtanzschritt denn etwas authentisches Joy Division-Flair schwirrt, oder eher die nächste popkulturelle Brechung der The Wombats-Zitat-Methode: “Let’s dance to joy division and celebrate the irony”. Eher zweiteres. Oder ob Bonaparte irgendwo den politischen Ansatz im Slogan “Anti Anti” versteckt haben, oder… naja. Eher zweiteres.

…ein schottischer Schritt zum Mikrofon, und mit dem schweren nordischen Akzent verwunderlich fröhlich klingen, etwas erstaunt vielleicht: “The chances of being born are so slim, so keep warm, keep warm. And take some heart in being born quite so young”. Und nun die Stimmen hoch, und die Blicke zum Zeltdach. Draußen dämmert es, die Lichter flackern durch die Nacht. Die Musik nistet im Magen. The chances of being happy are so slim. Aber jetzt!

…nicht, dass alles im Wohlfühlbereich der Indie-Lounge schwimmen würde. Von wüstem, ja wüstestem Pogo berichten leicht verwundete Zeugen des Turbostaat-Auftritts. Nicht überliefert ist, ob wieder die berühmte Rektal-Rakete gezündet wurde. Und FM Belfast im Zelt wummern mit ihren fanatischen Discobässen so heftig, dass das Bier im Freien in den Gläsern schwappt und die Isomatten auf dem Zeltplatz erzittern. Hilflos fragt sich der Rezensent des Rolling Stone, ob das denn nun ernst gemeint war. Nunja: Show. So oder so.

…und dann wird es dunkel, die Bühnenlichter leuchten etwas kräftiger. Die Schritte des Sängers mit dem glaswegischen Bierbauchansatz werden etwas weiter. Puberfahrungen, zwischenmenschliche: “Your silence is bearable. But only in short bursts. Then it becomes uncomfortable.” Und während das Schlagzeug wirbelt, wird aus dem verflochtenen Melodiezopf der Gitarren ein kratzendes Stoßen ohne Puffer und Bremsen… “loose your ties, loose your knots”. Brodeln. Der Zusammenbruch als Versprechen. Und: Der Schritt neben das Mikrofon, über den Lärm der zighundert-Watt-Anlage und über das Übereinanderfallen der Instrumente geht der Schrei bis in die letzten Reihen: “We’ll teach you to die!”… Augen schließen!

…ein bisschen unfair ist das. Schließlich proklamieren sich auch die Telekommander durch ihr Pop-Polit-Set, James Yuill füllt einen Vorabend mit Gitarren und Elektronikschnipseln bis zur lockeren Wolkendecke. Efterklang zünden ein Feuer in der Samstagnacht an. Aber: Ein bisschen ist das, der Rest, wie ein Schaulaufen um den schönsten Tanzschritt. Und alles was Musik doch braucht, wär doch: Leidenschaft komma bedinungslose. Die Anlage auf schottisch niederschreien, und ohne Kalkulation Kraft und Geschichten in die Zuschauerkörper pumpen.

Und das schönste Immergut war… als sich, wahrscheinlich zufällig, die Suche nach der Hipness mit der Leidenschaft überschnitt: Und sich Marr atemlos auf der schwankenden Zeltbühne in einen Rausch haspelten, Tiger Lou in der Maihitze Horatio besang, Sometree den Puls setzten, die Weakerthans das Verlassen in die Nacht räsonierten und Die Schönheit der Chance noch tomtische Gegenwart war.

Es braucht Glück, und Leidenschaft. Leidenschaft, keine Frisuren. Und das darf man gerne aussprechen wie damals Oliver Kahn sein Verlangen nach Eiern.
Und das schönste Konzert war: We Were Promised Jetpacks. Und es gilt: I can’t wait till summer. When you’re warmer. Make or break, Immergut.

This weeks recommmondation comes from Israel – by coincidence or by design – and tells a quiet and tragic love story between two men. Quiet and tragic because they are members of an jewish orthodox community in Israel, a community that is governed by the strict obeyance to jewish orthodox beliefs, traditions, rites and that therefore condems the idea of homosexual love. Haim Tabakman’s movie “Eyes Wide Open” tells the story of the impossible love between these two men in slow and often close-up pictures, his protagonists do not talk a lot, they talk through their acts or non-acts. This storytelling fits the story extremly well, because it is essentially a story of oppression, of oppression of feeling, acting and even communicating in the name of an orthodox belief.

Oppression that is excerted both by the individuals living in this community on themselves and others. The means to keep people in line mostly is social tabooization and stigmatization, starting with sheer ignorance and bad words, ascending to signs that try to deter customers to buy at the corrupt shop and its owner, going further in physical threats and finding their maximum in the shattering of the shop’s windows and a fight in the streets. All this bears a terrible resemblance to another episode in recent jewish history, namely their prosecution during the time of the 3rd Reich. This impression is further underpinned in one of the most unsettling scenes of the movie, where one of the communities youngs discusses with the Rabbi the issue of the purity of their community and the impurity that the two men bring over them.

“Eyes Wide Open” is a dark, unpleasant and apparently necessary statement against blind orthodoxy in a society that may be threatened by the extreme obeyance to the very values that helped to create and sustain it for over 2000 years. It also is a strong reminder that plurality and tolerance are values that are constantly threatened from new angles and therefore their final protection can never be finally achieved.

Und doch, eine kleine minderentdeckte Perle: Samstag nachmittag, als die großen Besuchermassen sich noch an mecklenburgischen Seen verliefen, da pluckerte ein Mann mit Sonnenbrille auf der kleinen Birkenhainbühne kleine Songs, die mit den weißen Sonnensegeln strahlten:

Norman Palm stand da, unweit der Heimat Berlin, auf der Bühne. Perlende, folkige Songs auf der Akustikgitarre. Leise genug, um angenehme sommerliche Entspannung aus dem Füllhorn zu streuen.

Passenderweise folgt im Juli das erste Album des Norman Palm. Den Song Landslide gibt es gratis, zur Zeit. Und eine Fullband-Studio-Produktion funktioniert nach anderen Regeln als ein Liveauftritt am ersten Sommertag Norddeutschlands. Aber: Sie funktioniert. Auch auf diese Art.

Sie hören: Sonnenbrillen, Staub, Hitze, und ein bisschen Egalität von den Urlaubs-Fensterbänken und -Landstraßen Deutschlands, Europas, der Welt. Wechselschlagblues, Popproduktion mit britischem Einschlag: Echoende backing vocals, hallende Harmonien der Marke: Turin Brakes, Simon & Garfunkel, Coldplay. An Worten gräbt sich ein: „Hey, Landslide. I Don’t Know.“ Sommerwurschtigkeit. You know. „I’m as lost as you.“

Eine Hauptassoziation ist da das fast vergessene Indie One-Hit Wonder Found A Way Out von Birth. Nicht ganz so markant vielleicht. Aber das war ja auch ein Mordskracher. Für Sommermixtapes. Auf genau die gehört Norman Palms Song aber auch. So oder so. Tipp.

Last week we caught a glimpse what the live of ordinary Iranians looks like in a state and political system that might be not so ordinary and common. What brings up the question how ordinary people, how an ordinary people can end up with a political system and society that is unordinary enough to pose as the archetype of evil in a high percentage of western evening news flashes. In short, and more ordinary ( ) terms: It is time for a short lesson in the recent history of Iran. And who would be qualified better for this job then somebody who actually witnessed the whole thing? Somebody like Marjane Satrapi, the Iranian comic author and artist who wrote and drew both the comic and later the movie “Persepolis”.

“Persepolis” is an auto-biographical piece both about the first 30 years of Marjane Satrapis life and the last 30 years in the history of Iran. And it is this duality between the little auto-biography and the big history that makes “Persepolis” a storytelling masterpiece. While Marjanes live is at times quite eventful, it is her storyline, that, by following the story of a single person, herself, about the whole span of the movie, provides a simple one-dimensional guide, a clothesline, that the author Marjane uses masterly to bring some order into the complex mess that history, especially recent history, sometimes is. She does not try to give a comprehensive or detailed overview about recent events in Iran, she simply tells the most important anecdotes from her life and by that succeeds at giving the viewer a more comprehensive overview than any detail heavy documentary could do. All the work of the author, selection, reduction, ordering is already done by her, in the natural process of remembrance, maybe this is what makes her narrative so strong.
